Substituting for Pastor Jeremiah today is guest blogger Audrey E.
Matthew 16 and 17 are rich with theological significance but none as great and profound as Peter's confession, "You are the Christ; the Son of the Living God." (Matt. 16:16). This truth is the foundation of all Christianity and the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 3:15). Peter is not the rock upon which Christ builds His church. The Church is built upon the confession Peter made and it is still the same, universal confession the Church holds to today. Jesus is "the Christ; the Son of the Living God." Only Christians can claim this truth. Anyone can attend a church service but not everyone is the Church. We are a people of His own choosing; set apart to glorify Jesus Christ (2 Tim. 2:19). We aren't a social club doing good works for the community. We are the Church called to the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), living out the Greatest Commandment (Mark 12:29-31) and holding to this great confession (Matt. 16:16) proclaimed for centuries. This confession is what Christ builds His Church upon and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Let us pray for His Church today to stand strong and centering all we do around Jesus.
